Description
This barrel is built for AR-308 (DPMS-pattern) rifles and suits builders who want a compact, mid-weight package capable of serious accuracy work with .308 Winchester or 7.62 NATO. It is machined from 416R stainless steel and given Ballistic Advantage’s QPQ Corrosion Resistant finish — a salt-bath nitriding process that penetrates the metal rather than coating it, which means the surface hardness holds up without adding measurable thickness to critical dimensions.
The mid-length gas system is the right choice at this barrel length for .308. Compared to a carbine-length setup, the longer dwell time spreads the pressure curve over a greater portion of the bullet’s travel, which softens the impulse the bolt carrier delivers to your shoulder and gives the system more time to complete the unlocking cycle before peak port pressure drops. That translates to a more manageable recoil pulse and reduced wear on the bolt and carrier over time. The included pinned low-profile gas block keeps the gas system integral to the barrel assembly, which simplifies handguard selection — note that the gas block journal is sized specifically for .875-inch low-profile blocks, and the barrel is not compatible with aftermarket piston conversion kits.
The BA Hanson profile removes material from the barrel in the areas least critical to rigidity, bringing weight down while preserving the stiffness that governs harmonic consistency. The 1-10 twist rate is a practical middle ground for .308 — it stabilizes the full range of common hunting and match bullets from 150 to 175 grains without over-spinning lighter varmint loads. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, the standard for this caliber. Every barrel in the Premium Black Series is high-pressure and magnetic particle inspected before it ships.
