Description
A low-profile gas block is what makes a free-float handguard possible on an AR-platform rifle. Standard front sight bases are tall, pinned, and wide enough to prevent most free-float tubes from sliding over them during installation. Replacing the FSB with a block like this one clears that obstruction entirely, so the handguard can attach directly to the upper receiver and float clear of the barrel — which removes the variable pressure that a clamped handguard puts on the barrel and can improve shot-to-shot consistency.
BCM machines this block from steel and applies a phosphate finish — the same corrosion-resistant treatment used on military small arms components. The bore is honed after finishing rather than before, which matters because phosphate application adds a thin but measurable layer inside the bore. Honing after the fact brings the internal diameter back to tolerance, so the block seats on a .750-diameter barrel the way it should: snug enough that gas cannot bypass the port, but without requiring the kind of hammer persuasion that risks shifting the block off the gas port once it is installed.
Retention is handled by steel set screws — 10-32 by 3/16-inch knurled cup point — which bite into the barrel when torqued down and are typically used with a thread-locking compound for a permanent installation. This is a clean, tool-requiring removal method that works well for dedicated builds. Note that a gas tube roll pin is not included; you will need to source one separately if you are not reusing the pin from the block you are replacing.
