On the upper, Bootleg eliminated the forward assist entirely. That decision is deliberate: the forward assist adds a snag point on gear and clothing without providing a meaningful mechanical advantage in most real-world malfunction scenarios. Its removal trims weight and cleans up the profile. The dust cover pin is a low-profile brass deflector design that captures itself, so there is no C-clip to lose during field maintenance.

The lower, which Bootleg calls the Smuggler, earns its value through a handful of features that address genuine handling problems. The ambidextrous bolt release — both the knob and the internal parts — means left- and right-handed shooters can drop the bolt without shifting their grip. A hex-head adjustable set screw bears against the rear lug interface, letting you dial in a firm, rattle-free fit with any MIL-SPEC upper rather than accepting whatever tolerance stack you happen to get. The fully enclosed trigger guard and lightly flared magazine well are structural choices, not cosmetic ones: the enclosed guard removes a stress point, and the flare aids positive magazine seating under pressure.
