Description

The CCI Pest Control Big 4 Shotshell is built for one specific job: dealing with snakes, rodents, and other close-range pests when a conventional bullet would be overkill or a safety concern. It lets a standard .44 Special or .44 Magnum revolver do the work of a pest-control tool without any additional hardware.

Where earlier handgun shotshells loaded with finer shot struggled to reach targets beyond arm’s length with meaningful energy, CCI addressed that limitation by stepping up to No. 4 lead shot. The larger pellets carry more individual mass, which translates to better downrange energy retention and a wider effective engagement distance than smaller-shot pistol shells can manage. The trade-off is a coarser pattern, but for the pests these rounds are designed for, that is the right exchange.

At 1,000 fps muzzle velocity, the payload moves quickly enough to produce effective patterns at the short ranges where handgun shotshells are actually used. The 110-grain shot charge is housed in a non-reloadable capsule inside a standard-length cartridge case, so it feeds and chambers in any revolver that accepts .44 Special or .44 Magnum. CCI does note that lightweight revolvers can experience cylinder lockup due to capsule movement under recoil, and these rounds are not suitable for ported barrels or ported compensators. They are also not recommended for rifles. Each box contains 10 rounds, and the boxes themselves are reusable — a practical touch for range storage.

This is a purpose-built pest-control load, not a defensive or target round. Within that narrow scope, the Big 4 designation meaningfully expands what a centerfire handgun shotshell can reach.
