Description

CCI’s Pest Control Big 4 Shotshell is a purpose-built round for dealing with snakes, rodents, and similar close-range nuisance animals using a standard 9mm pistol or revolver. It is not a general-purpose or self-defense load — it is a tool for a specific job, and it does that job well within its design envelope.

Where conventional handgun shotshells have historically been loaded with fine shot like No. 9, CCI’s Big 4 load uses No. 4 lead shot. That larger shot size carries more energy per pellet and maintains that energy over a greater distance, which translates to a meaningful increase in effective range and the ability to handle larger pests than fine-shot loads can reliably stop. The trade-off is a coarser pattern, but at the distances where a handgun shotshell makes sense, that is rarely a practical limitation.

The 45-grain payload exits at 1,000 fps, which is light by 9mm standards — intentionally so. These cartridges are not designed to cycle a semi-automatic pistol the way standard 9mm ammunition does, and CCI is explicit that reliable function cannot be guaranteed across all platforms. Revolvers chambered in 9mm are a natural fit, though CCI notes that lightweight revolvers can experience cylinder lockup due to capsule movement under recoil. The cartridge cases are marked NR and are not reloadable.

One firm restriction: these rounds must not be fired through ported barrels or ported recoil compensators. Ammunition is sold in boxes of 10, and the boxes are designed to be reusable for storage.
