Most .22 LR hollow points are built for plinking, not protection. Their copper-plated cavities rarely open at rimfire velocities, particularly through the short barrels that make compact carry pistols practical. The CCI Uppercut was engineered specifically to close that gap. Rather than adapting a standard rimfire projectile to a defensive role, CCI developed an exclusive 32-grain jacketed hollow point from the ground up with nose skiving — a series of cuts pre-formed into the bullet’s cavity that give the petals a defined line along which to fold back. That geometry allows expansion to begin reliably even at the lower velocities produced by 2.5- to 4-inch semi-automatic handgun barrels, where most hollow points simply fail to open at all.
The trade-off in any defensive hollow point is expansion versus penetration. A bullet that opens too aggressively sheds velocity fast and may not reach vital structures; one that doesn’t open sacrifices the terminal diameter that makes the design effective. The Uppercut’s skived jacket is weighted at 32 grains to strike a balance: it expands consistently while retaining enough mass to penetrate to the depths that matter. The bullet is also unwaxed, which keeps the feed path cleaner and helps the round cycle more consistently across temperature extremes — a real consideration in a gun carried daily.
CCI’s priming compound is formulated for the consistent ignition rimfire requires, and the propellant charge is tuned to deliver useful velocity out of short barrels without being so hot that it destabilizes function or causes excess fouling. This is ammunition designed around the actual constraints of a compact .22 carry gun, not around what looks good on a chronograph attached to a rifle-length barrel.
