C&H machines the plate from 6061 aluminum and finishes it to MIL-SPEC Type III hard anodize in black — the same anodize specification used on military hardware, chosen because it produces a surface harder than bare aluminum that resists wear at the optic interface where metal-on-metal contact is constant.
