The Anaconda is built for hunters and handgun silhouette shooters who want a large-frame revolver in a hard-hitting magnum caliber. Colt redesigned it from the ground up in 2021 around an oversized version of the Python action, which means the lockwork geometry is scaled to handle the stresses of full-power .44 Magnum loads rather than simply adapted from a smaller platform.

The action runs on a linear leaf spring rather than the coil springs common to most double-action revolvers. In practice this produces a trigger pull that remains consistent in weight and feel through the full stroke, without the stacking — the progressive increase in resistance near the break — that coil-spring designs often exhibit. That consistency is useful when shooting from field positions where a surprize-free break matters more than raw pull weight.

The 1-in-20 inch twist rate is slower than what you would find on a .357 Magnum barrel, which suits the longer, heavier cast and jacketed bullets common in .44 Magnum hunting loads. Shooters running lighter plinking loads should be aware that a slower twist stabilizes heavy projectiles well but may not be optimized for very light bullets at high velocity.

The barrel wears a recessed target crown that protects the rifling from contact damage during field carry, and the frame is drilled and tapped for optic mounts — relevant for hunters who want a low-power handgun scope for deer or hog work. Adjustable sights are fitted as standard and can be swapped for other compatible units. The entire package is built from stainless steel, which requires less maintenance than blued carbon steel in wet or humid conditions. Hogue grips are fitted from the factory to help manage the recoil that comes with the territory in this caliber.
