Black Cloud FS Steel is Federal’s dedicated waterfowl load, built around the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad — a design that addresses one of the persistent problems with high-velocity steel: the wad staying with the pattern too long and disrupting pellet flight. The rear-deploying petals and side-mounted vents on the FLITECONTROL FLEX separate the wad from the shot column at the right moment rather than riding along and scattering the payload. The result is denser, more consistent patterns at waterfowl ranges whether you’re running ported chokes or standard ones, which matters because many older FLITECONTROL designs were optimized for non-ported tubes only.

The 3.5-inch hull and 1½-ounce payload of #3 steel give you the shot capacity and pellet count to work on larger ducks and early-season geese without stepping up to a heavier shot size. At 1,500 fps, the load generates the velocity needed to make steel effective at ethical hunting distances, compensating for the lower density of steel relative to lead. The Catalyst lead-free primer Federal uses here is designed to produce consistent ignition across temperature swings — relevant when you’re shooting early morning in cold marsh conditions — and the propellant is formulated to burn cleanly, reducing the fouling that can accumulate during high-volume hunts.
