Description
Federal’s Black Cloud FS Steel in the 3.5-inch, BB-shot configuration is built for serious waterfowl hunters who are pushing the range envelope on geese and other large birds. The 3.5-inch shell allows a payload of 1-1/2 ounces of shot, which gives BB pellets enough mass and density to carry meaningful energy at the distances big Canada geese demand.
What separates Black Cloud from a standard steel load is the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad. Unlike conventional wads that peel away from the shot column at the muzzle, this wad uses rear-deploying petals and side-mounted vents to control exactly when and where the payload separates. The result is a tighter, more consistent pattern whether you’re running a ported waterfowl choke or a standard one — a meaningful advantage because most steel-specific wads are engineered around one choke type or the other, not both.
The payload itself is a blend of two pellet types: 40 percent FLITESTOPPER steel, which features a cutting-edge belt around the equator designed to increase wound channel diameter, and 60 percent standard Premium steel round shot. That combination balances impact trauma with raw pattern density rather than relying on either alone.
Federal also addresses a common frustration with high-volume waterfowl shooting: fouling. The propellant is formulated to be temperature-stable and clean-burning, which reduces the carbon and residue buildup that accumulates during a long morning blind session. The primer is sealed and the crimp is moisture-resistant, so shells stored in wet blind bags or damp boat boxes hold their integrity. Each box contains 25 rounds, with 10 boxes per case for those who shoot multiple days per season.
