Description

The Federal Premium Freight Train is a slug load built for whitetail, bear, and boar hunters who need serious terminal performance at ranges where most shotgun slugs have already run out of authority. It fires a solid copper projectile through a sabot, which means the slug itself never contacts the rifling directly — the sabot does the work of engaging the bore, aligns the projectile concentrically, and then peels away cleanly at the muzzle. That separation is what allows the copper slug to maintain its ballistic form and deliver the accuracy Federal rates at less than four inches at 200 yards through a rifled barrel.

The copper construction matters for two reasons beyond the lead-free compliance it provides. First, copper holds its shape under the pressures of acceleration better than softer alloys, which helps the slug exit the sabot without deformation. Second, the externally skived nose cavity is engineered to open reliably across a range of impact velocities — Federal redesigned the skiving geometry and hollow-point dimensions compared to the original Trophy Copper sabot slug specifically to improve penetration depth while still producing consistent expansion. A polymer tip fills the hollow point to protect it in the magazine and to maintain a clean aerodynamic profile that preserves downrange velocity.

The sabot and propellant combination is formulated to perform consistently across temperature extremes, so groups do not open up in cold weather the way some slug loads can. At 275 grains and 1,700 fps muzzle velocity out of a 20-gauge shell, this is a round suited to a rifled-barrel 20-gauge used as a dedicated deer or large-game gun rather than a field gun pressed into occasional slug duty.
