Federal’s HammerDown line exists because standard rifle ammunition wasn’t designed with lever-action mechanics in mind. Most centerfire loads are engineered around bolt-action feeding geometry, and that mismatch shows up as hesitations on the feed ramp, inconsistent cycling through tubular magazines, and terminal performance tuned for barrel lengths that lever guns don’t typically run. HammerDown addresses each of those problems at the design stage rather than as an afterthought.

The .360 Buckhammer cartridge is purpose-built for the lever-action platform, and this load pairs it with a molecularly bonded soft point bullet. Molecular bonding ties the jacket to the core during the manufacturing process, so the two components resist separating on impact even when the bullet enters at an angle or passes through bone. The result is more consistent expansion and weight retention across a range of shot scenarios rather than core-jacket separation that bleeds energy without doing useful work.

The case geometry has been modified with a chamfered profile specifically to smooth the transition from the tubular magazine onto the feed ramp, which matters in a platform where rounds present nose-to-primer rather than in a staggered stack. Nickel plating on the brass adds a layer of corrosion resistance, which is worth having in a rifle that often lives in a saddle scabbard or a truck rack rather than a climate-controlled safe. Muzzle velocity has been calibrated for lever-action barrel lengths so the expansion threshold of the bonded bullet is actually reached under real-world conditions, not just in a test barrel that no production rifle ships with.
