Description

Federal’s Hi-Bird is built for hunters who put serious volume through their shotgun chasing pheasants, quail, and other upland birds. It’s a hunting load first, designed to hold consistent patterns at the distances where flushing birds are actually shot rather than optimized around the pattern board at 16 yards.

The shell uses a two-piece wad with what Federal calls Soft Cell technology. The cushion section of that wad compresses on ignition to absorb the initial spike of acceleration, which takes some of the sharp edge off felt recoil without changing the shot charge’s behavior downrange. The same wad design helps keep the shot column from deforming as it travels through the bore, and tighter, more uniform pellets produce more consistent patterns at longer ranges — the practical difference between a bird in the bag and a clean miss at the edge of range.

The lead shot itself is formulated for a balance between hardness and density. Harder shot deforms less under the pressure of ignition and during its passage through the choke, which preserves pellet roundness and contributes to pattern consistency. At 1,330 fps and a 1-1/4 oz payload of #7.5 shot, this load carries enough pellets and enough velocity to work effectively on medium-sized upland species without pushing recoil into uncomfortable territory for a full day of hunting.

Boxes run 25 rounds and cases contain 10 boxes, so stocking up for a season or a guided hunt is straightforward. This is a purpose-built field load, not a target or clay load pressed into service — Federal engineered it specifically for the upland hunting application.
