FED HMR DWN 44MAG 270GR SP 20/200

Description

Federal’s HammerDown line was built around a specific problem: standard handgun cartridges loaded to handgun priorities don’t always perform optimally when fired through a lever-action rifle’s longer barrel and tubular magazine system. This .44 Magnum load addresses that from the ground up, developed in direct collaboration with Henry Repeating Arms to ensure reliable function in lever guns rather than treating rifle compatibility as an afterthought.

The case geometry is shaped and chamfered to move cleanly through tubular magazines and lever-action feeding mechanisms, where rim and case profile interact with the carrier and lifter differently than in a revolver cylinder. Nickel plating on the brass reduces friction at those contact points, which matters in a platform that depends on smooth, positive feeding under field conditions.

The 270-grain soft point uses a molecularly bonded jacket, meaning the jacket material is fused to the lead core rather than mechanically attached. Under expansion, a bonded bullet holds together instead of shedding jacket petals, which supports consistent weight retention and deeper, more uniform penetration through heavy muscle and bone. The propellant charge is tuned specifically for lever-action barrel lengths, so the velocity figures reflect real-world rifle performance rather than numbers derived from a short test pistol barrel. Nickel-plated brass is reloadable and resists corrosion during storage. Boxer-primed cases are straightforward to deprime and reload with standard single-stage or progressive equipment.

This loading suits hunters running .44 Magnum lever guns for whitetail, hogs, or similarly sized game at practical hunting distances. It functions in revolvers as well, though the design priorities are clearly oriented toward the rifle platform.
