Federal’s HammerDown line exists because standard pistol-cartridge ammunition was never optimized for lever-action rifles. Most handgun loads are designed around short barrel lengths, so when the same cartridge is fired through a lever gun’s longer tube, the powder burn curve, bullet construction, and velocity don’t line up the way they should. Federal addressed this by engineering HammerDown from the ground up around lever-action barrel lengths, tailoring the propellant charge so the 250-grain bonded hollow point bullet reaches its intended velocity and expansion threshold through that barrel, not a handgun’s.

The bonded construction matters here because .45 Colt at lever-gun velocities pushes impact energy into territory where a standard jacketed hollow point can either over-expand and shed weight or fail to open reliably depending on range. Molecular bonding locks the jacket to the core so the bullet expands consistently while retaining enough mass to drive penetration. That balance makes it suitable for hunting medium game at the ranges a lever rifle is realistically used.

The case geometry and bullet profile were shaped specifically to feed through tubular magazines and side-gate loading systems without the nose-to-primer contact concerns that complicate pointed bullets in tube magazines. Nickel-plated brass resists corrosion and feeds smoothly, which matters if the rifle lives in a scabbard or wet conditions. Federal developed this line in partnership with Henry Repeating Arms, meaning the feeding geometry was validated against actual lever-action mechanisms rather than adapted after the fact.
