The payload uses high-antimony lead, which is harder than standard lead shot. That hardness matters in the barrel: softer pellets flatten against the wad and barrel wall under the force of ignition, which distorts their flight path and opens patterns unpredictably. Harder pellets hold their shape better, which translates directly to tighter, more repeatable patterns at the distances where clay targets are engaged.

The Podium wad is Federal’s own design, engineered to cushion the shot column at the moment of ignition. That cushioning reduces the deformation forces acting on the pellets before they even leave the muzzle, compounding the benefit of the hard shot itself. A one-ounce payload at 1,250 fps sits on the lighter, faster end of the 12-gauge target spectrum, which keeps felt recoil manageable across a full day of shooting — a real consideration when your score depends on a consistent mount and swing through the final round.

The hull construction is deliberately reloader-friendly. The solid brass head resizes more consistently than weaker head designs, and the single-piece plastic hull with integral base wad is tolerant of a wider selection of component wads, giving handloaders more flexibility when working up reloads.
