Federal’s Prairie Storm FS Lead is built specifically for upland hunting — pheasant, quail, grouse — where birds flush at variable distances and pattern consistency matters more than raw pellet count. The load pairs standard lead shot with Federal’s FliteStopper lead pellets, a design that combines conventional spherical pellets with a flat-edged pellet that resists deformation through the bore and creates a wider wound channel on impact. The result is a mixed payload that delivers both energy transfer and pattern density from a single shell.

The component that ties the system together is the FliteControl Flex wad. Unlike conventional wads that release at the muzzle, the FliteControl Flex is engineered to stay with the shot column longer and then open from the rear, pulling away cleanly rather than disrupting the pellets from the front. This matters because early wad separation is a primary cause of blown or uneven patterns. By delaying and controlling that separation, the wad helps maintain a tighter, more uniform spread downrange. Critically, the Flex designation means it is compatible with both standard and tighter aftermarket choke tubes — a practical advantage when different hunting situations call for different constrictions.

At 1,350 feet per second, the load moves quickly enough for crossing shots on flushing birds without pushing recoil to a point that disrupts follow-up shots from a 20-gauge platform. The one-ounce payload in a 2-3/4-inch hull is a sensible balance for a sub-gauge shell, giving shooters adequate pellet count in #5 shot without overloading the case. Each box contains 25 rounds, and cases are packed ten boxes to a case.
