Description

Federal Premium’s ELD-X load in 6.5 PRC is built for hunters who shoot at extended distances and need a bullet that performs consistently whether the shot breaks at 150 yards or well past 400. The cartridge was designed around long, high-BC projectiles, and the 143-grain ELD-X is a natural fit — the combination produces a flat trajectory and retains enough velocity at distance to drive reliable expansion on big game.

The ELD-X bullet’s polymer tip does two things that matter in a hunting context. First, it prevents the tip from deforming during the heat and pressure of feeding and chambering, which keeps the ballistic coefficient consistent shot to shot. Second, when the bullet reaches the target, that same tip initiates expansion even at the reduced velocities typical of longer shots — a real consideration when the cartridge has shed several hundred feet per second by the time it connects. The concentric copper jacket and robust shank work together to control how that expansion unfolds: the front expands aggressively while the rear holds together, retaining enough mass to penetrate deeply through shoulder bone and into the vitals.

A ballistic coefficient of .625 means the bullet sheds velocity and drifts in crosswind relatively slowly compared to blunter projectiles. At 500 yards, Federal’s own data shows wind drift of just under 14 inches in a 10 mph crosswind — useful context for dialing a dope card or confirming a firing solution in the field. Muzzle velocity of 2,900 fps gives the load a useful margin of retained energy across the ranges where 6.5 PRC rifles are most often used for elk, mule deer, and similarly sized game.
