Federal’s HST line was developed for law enforcement duty use, and this .357 Magnum loading brings that same engineering to personal defense. The core premise is straightforward: a hollow point that expands consistently and retains nearly all of its weight, regardless of what it passes through on the way to the target. Many defensive hollow points compromise one of those qualities for the other, shedding jacket material to achieve expansion or failing to open reliably after passing through an intermediate barrier. The HST bullet is designed to avoid that trade-off, with a jacket and core engineered to stay bonded together while the nose opens to its intended diameter.

The hollow point cavity is shaped so that barrier material — fabric, drywall, glass — does not pack into it and prevent expansion. That matters in a real defensive situation, where the shooter rarely controls what the bullet encounters before it reaches the threat. Federal tests this load against the FBI protocol, which was developed specifically to evaluate how ammunition performs after passing through common barriers, and it is the benchmark serious duty ammunition is measured against.

A nickel-plated case resists corrosion during extended carry and feeds more smoothly than bare brass in semi-automatic revolvers and lever-actions chambered for the cartridge. Muzzle velocity is 1,340 feet per second from a four-inch test barrel, which gives the 154-grain bullet enough energy to drive reliable expansion without sacrificing controllability.
