Fusion Handgun starts from the other direction, engineering the bullet specifically for the shorter barrels and lower velocities of handgun hunting, where reliable expansion can’t be taken for granted. The result is a load suited to hunters who carry a 10mm pistol into whitetail or hog country and need confidence that the bullet will do its job even when a shot isn’t ideal.

The construction method is central to how this bullet performs. Rather than mechanically joining a cup-and-core bullet, Federal applies the copper jacket electrochemically directly onto the lead core. That process creates a molecular bond between jacket and core that resists separation on impact — the bullet stays together as it expands, which translates to deeper penetration and more retained weight than an unbonded design typically delivers at equivalent velocities. The nose is skived before leaving the factory, meaning the tip is pre-cut in a pattern that programs where and how the bullet opens, giving you consistent, repeatable expansion rather than expansion that varies with impact angle or velocity.

At 1,200 fps muzzle velocity from a 6-inch test barrel, the load is moving fast enough to expand the Fusion Soft Point reliably on deer-sized game, but Federal has kept the bullet weight and velocity in a range that stays manageable for extended carry and multiple follow-up shots. The 200-grain projectile retains energy through the trajectory in a way that remains effective at distances practical for handgun hunting. This is purpose-built field ammunition, not a range load wearing a hunting label.
