Description

Federal’s HST was developed as a duty load for law enforcement, and that origin shapes everything about how it performs. The goal was a hollow point that would open consistently regardless of what it passed through first — clothing, glass, wallboard — without the cavity plugging and failing to expand. The HST’s hollow point geometry addresses this by allowing debris to shed as the bullet enters tissue, so expansion is driven by hydraulic pressure rather than blocked by material packed into the nose.

The 147-grain loading is the subsonic option in the HST line. At 1,000 fps from a 4-inch barrel, it sits well below the speed of sound, which matters to shooters running suppressed pistols — no supersonic crack means the only noise is mechanical. At standard pressure rather than +P, it also produces less felt recoil than lighter, faster loads, which can improve split times for defensive shooting. The trade-off is a slightly arcing trajectory compared to the 124-grain HST, though at defensive distances that difference is not meaningful.

Weight retention is a deliberate design priority here. The jacket and lead core are constructed to stay together under stress, so the bullet that expands is nearly the same mass as the bullet that left the case. That consistency in terminal performance is what the FBI testing protocol measures, and Federal designed this load specifically to meet those standards. The nickel-plated case resists corrosion and feeds reliably, a practical consideration for ammunition that may sit in a carry gun for extended periods. Packed 20 rounds per box, with a 200-round case option available.
