Federal Speed-Shok is purpose-built for waterfowl hunters who want a steel load that cycles reliably and delivers enough energy at reasonable ranges to cleanly take ducks. The 28 gauge version fits shooters who prefer a lighter, more responsive shotgun over a heavier 12 or 20 gauge platform without giving up a functional waterfowl shell.

Steel shot requires more velocity than lead to transfer comparable energy at distance, and Speed-Shok addresses that by pairing a fast-burning powder with a high-performance primer. That combination gets the payload moving quickly without the kind of slow, progressive burn that leaves residue fouling the action and bore. Federal redesigned the powder and primer combination specifically to reduce that residue buildup, which translates to less cleaning between hunts and more consistent ignition in cold, wet conditions where waterfowl seasons typically run.
