Description

Federal Syntech Defense is purpose-built for concealed carry and home defense, offering a hollow-point design that behaves differently on impact than a conventional expanding bullet. Instead of simply mushrooming, the projectile splits into three separate segments and a retained core the moment it contacts tissue. The segments drive into surrounding tissue to create additional wound channels, each penetrating more than six inches, while the core continues on a straight path and reaches twelve to eighteen inches of depth through both bare ballistic gel and heavy clothing. That dual-action terminal performance means the round addresses both the need for a wide initial disruption and the FBI-standard penetration depth without relying on a single mechanism to do both jobs.

Feeding that performance is a Syntech polymer jacket rather than the copper jacket found on conventional defensive loads. The polymer eliminates the metal-on-metal contact that generates lead and copper fouling inside the barrel, and it also reduces the heat buildup that accelerates throat wear during sustained use. For a defensive pistol that may also see regular practice sessions with the same ammunition, that matters. Ignition comes from Federal’s Catalyst primer, a lead-free design formulated for consistent ignition across a range of conditions. The 138-grain projectile is heavier than standard 124-grain 9mm defensive loads, which Federal uses to achieve a lower-velocity, subsonic-adjacent profile at 1,050 fps while maintaining adequate energy for reliable terminal performance at typical defensive distances.
