Description
Federal Top Gun is a purpose-built target load for skeet and sporting clays shooters who put a lot of shells downrange and need consistent results without variation from round to round. The 28 gauge is a natural fit for experienced clay shooters who want a lighter-recoiling platform without sacrificing pattern quality, and this load is engineered to meet that demand rather than simply being a scaled-down version of a heavier offering.
The hard lead shot is the centerpiece of the design. Softer shot deforms on setback during firing, which produces irregular pellet shapes and uneven patterns. Hard shot retains its spherical form through the bore, which is what allows the eight-segment crimp and Federal’s wad column to deliver consistent, even patterns at the target. For clay work, pattern uniformity matters more than raw pellet energy — a predictable spread is what breaks birds reliably, and that is the performance problem this load is built to solve.
Federal uses their own primer in every round, which contributes to the ignition consistency that keeps velocity standard across a case. At 1,330 fps muzzle velocity, the #9 shot carries enough energy for typical clay distances while the smaller pellet diameter translates to higher pellet count per charge — 439 pellets per shell — giving the pattern more density and a better probability of sufficient hits on a fast crosser or a dropping teal target. Each box contains 25 shells, and the case packs 250 rounds, which suits a full day of competitive shooting or extended practice without running short.
