Federal’s Train + Protect line exists to solve a specific problem: most dedicated defensive hollow points are too expensive to practice with regularly, so shooters train with ball and carry hollow points, meaning they never run their actual carry load through the gun. Train + Protect closes that gap by building the VHP bullet around a design that works as both a range round and a defensive round, so every box you shoot is the same box you’d stake a life on.

The VHP bullet achieves this through a pre-skived copper jacket — the jacket is scored before assembly, so the petals peel back reliably on soft tissue contact without requiring the higher velocities some hollow points depend on to open. At 850 feet per second from a 5-inch barrel, the 230-grain projectile is moving at a velocity consistent with standard-pressure .45 ACP loading, which keeps felt recoil predictable and controllable across a full training session. The copper jacket also wraps the base of the bullet, which reduces lead deposits in the bore and helps maintain consistent accuracy as round count climbs.

The cases are reloadable brass with a Boxer primer, meaning spent brass can be processed on standard single-stage or progressive presses if you reload. A mouth crimp at the bullet’s cannelure resists setback during repeated chambering cycles, which matters in a carry pistol where the same round may be chambered and ejected many times before being fired. Fifty rounds per box at a price point designed for volume use makes it practical to train with the same projectile geometry you carry.
