Federal’s Varmint & Predator line is built around a straightforward premise: put a purpose-designed varmint bullet on target consistently enough that the terminal performance can do its job. This load pairs Federal’s own brass, primer, and propellant with the Hornady V-MAX, a bullet engineered specifically for the kind of explosive, rapid energy transfer that drops prairie dogs and coyotes decisively rather than pushing them.

The V-MAX achieves that terminal behavior through a polymer tip seated over a hollow lead core. On impact, the tip is driven rearward into the nose cavity, initiating expansion almost immediately regardless of where in the velocity window the bullet arrives — the minimum terminal velocity is rated at 1,600 fps, which gives the load meaningful effective range before the bullet stops performing as designed. The tip also serves a ballistic function before impact: it improves the aerodynamic profile and helps the .330 ballistic coefficient hold velocity across distance, which matters in a flat-shooting cartridge where long shots at small targets are routine.

At the muzzle the bullet is moving at 3,425 fps, generating 1,953 ft-lbs of energy. By 300 yards that drops to 2,545 fps and 1,078 ft-lbs — still well above the minimum expansion threshold. Federal loads these in reloadable brass cases with Boxer primers, so handloaders can get a second use out of the components. Rounds are packaged 20 to a box, making it straightforward to work up a zero or verify point of impact without committing to a larger quantity.
