The Fiocchi Flyway Steel line is built around the demands of waterfowl hunting, where steel shot is required and pattern consistency at realistic hunting ranges separates a clean harvest from a crippled bird. This particular load is loaded in a three-inch hull, which provides the case capacity to push a 1 1/8-ounce payload of #4 steel to a muzzle velocity of 1,500 feet per second — enough energy to reach birds at the distances typical of pass shooting without sacrificing the pattern density that decoying ducks require up close.

#4 steel is a versatile selection that sits in a useful middle ground: the pellets are large enough to anchor mallards and similarly sized waterfowl, but the payload count stays high enough to produce a workable pattern rather than the sparse coverage that larger steel sizes can leave at the edges. Steel shot carries less energy per pellet than lead of equivalent size, so the velocity advantage this load delivers matters — faster pellets hit harder and maintain their trajectory better through wind.

Fiocchi builds the load around a treated steel shot charge, paired with protective wads designed to prevent the steel from contacting and scoring the bore.
