Federal’s Fusion MSR line was built around a straightforward problem: standard hunting ammunition was designed for bolt-action rifles with longer barrels, and modern sporting rifles running shorter barrels were giving up meaningful velocity as a result. Fusion MSR addresses that directly with fast-burning, clean-burning, low-flash propellants that are optimized to reach useful speeds through the shorter barrels common on MSR platforms, rather than relying on powder charges that only finish burning after the bullet has left the muzzle.

The 62-grain Fusion Soft Point projectile is constructed by molecularly bonding the jacket to a pressure-formed lead core. That process, rather than a conventional cup-and-core design, keeps the jacket and core from separating on impact — a meaningful distinction when hunting deer-sized game where deep, controlled penetration matters more than explosive fragmentation. The soft point nose initiates expansion reliably without requiring the high terminal velocities that hollow points often need to open consistently.

The primer is specifically selected to work with free-floating firing pins, which are standard in AR-pattern rifles and can occasionally cause slam-fire issues with primers designed for the heavier hammer strikes of bolt guns. The military-style case coloring serves a practical purpose on the production line: it provides a quick visual check that the brass has the correct metallurgical properties for the pressures these loads generate. Muzzle velocity is rated at 2,750 feet per second.
