Federal’s Fusion line built its reputation on one core idea: a copper jacket that is electro-chemically bonded to the lead core rather than mechanically attached. That bond keeps the two materials working together through the entire expansion event, so the bullet sheds almost none of its original weight as it drives through tissue and bone. The Fusion Tipped takes that same construction and adds a polymer tip to the nose. The tip does two things simultaneously — it raises the ballistic coefficient to .575, which flattens the arc and narrows wind drift at longer ranges, and it also acts as a wedge that drives into the hollow cavity on impact to initiate expansion reliably even at the reduced velocities you see at extended distance.

A muzzle velocity of 2,775 fps from a 175-grain projectile gives this load a meaningful energy advantage at range compared to lighter, faster bullets that bleed velocity more quickly. The heavier bullet’s higher sectional density also helps it push through shoulder bone and heavy muscle on large-bodied deer, elk, and similar game without the jacket separating from the core. The skived nose cavity is shaped to work with the polymer tip so that expansion begins consistently rather than depending on impact angle or target resistance. Federal lists this as a big-game and long-range load, and the combination of a high ballistic coefficient and a bonded core makes it genuinely suited to both roles — the trajectory stays predictable past 400 yards, and terminal performance doesn’t degrade the way an unbonded bullet’s might when velocity drops.
