Hornady Critical Duty is built for law enforcement and serious defensive use, where the ammunition has to perform reliably after passing through intermediate barriers — clothing, drywall, auto glass — before reaching the target. That requirement drives every construction decision in this load.
The FlexLock bullet starts with a flexible polymer tip seated in the hollow point cavity. Where a conventional hollow point can pack with barrier material and expand poorly or not at all, the polymer tip holds the cavity open through the barrier so the bullet still expands the way it was designed to when it reaches tissue. A large mechanical InterLock band crimps the copper jacket to the lead core at a defined point around the bullet’s shank, which resists the jacket-core separation that can occur under the high impact velocities and lateral stresses of barrier penetration. The result is a bullet that tends to stay together and retain more of its original weight rather than shedding the jacket and leaving a lighter, less effective core to do the work.
The 175-grain projectile is on the heavier end of the spectrum for 10mm Auto, which means it launches at a lower velocity than lighter loads in the same caliber but carries more sectional density. That favors penetration depth and momentum transfer, both of which matter in the scenarios this load is designed for. Cases are nickel-plated, which makes chamber checks easier in low light and reduces friction during feeding compared to bare brass. A low-flash propellant charge is used to minimize muzzle flash, a practical consideration when shooting in darkness. Rounds are packed twenty to a box.
