Hornady’s Custom line exists for shooters who want ammunition built to factory tolerances but loaded with the same care as a hand-assembled round. This 10mm load is aimed at two overlapping uses: personal defense and medium game hunting, where terminal performance matters more than round count or price per box.

The XTP — eXtreme Terminal Performance — bullet is a jacketed hollow point designed around a specific expansion philosophy. Rather than opening as fast and wide as possible on contact, the XTP is engineered to expand progressively and retain its weight through the expansion cycle. The jacket is thicker toward the base, which controls how far back the petals peel and keeps the bullet from fragmenting under the velocity the 10mm generates. That retained mass is what drives penetration depth after expansion begins, which is the relevant trade-off for both defense and hunting: a bullet that expands too quickly loses momentum before reaching vital tissue, while one that doesn’t expand reliably behaves more like a hardball round.

At 180 grains, this projectile sits at the heavier end of common 10mm bullet weights. Heavier bullets in a given caliber generally sacrifice some muzzle velocity in exchange for higher sectional density, which supports penetration — a reasonable trade for the medium game or self-defense context this load is built around. Muzzle velocity is 1,275 fps with 650 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. Brass cases are Boxer-primed and reloadable, which matters to handloaders who want to recover and rework brass from a premium load rather than treat it as disposable.

Hornady selects cases, primers, and propellants as a matched system rather than assembling from whatever components are available, and each round is inspected before leaving the factory. The load ships in boxes of 20, with case quantities of 200 available.
