Description
Hornady’s American Whitetail Rifled Slug is built for deer hunters running smooth-bore shotguns in slug-only zones who want a round that performs reliably without demanding a dedicated rifled barrel. The hollow point construction initiates expansion on contact, transferring energy quickly rather than passing through, which matters when the shot angle or distance isn’t ideal. A compression wad seats behind the slug and seals the bore as the charge ignites, maintaining consistent pressure behind the projectile and helping sustain the velocity needed for reliable expansion at the distances typical of whitetail hunting.
At the muzzle the slug leaves at 1,600 fps, and while velocity bleeds off to roughly 997 fps at 100 yards, the energy figures at that range remain adequate for clean kills on deer-sized game. The lead alloy core is soft enough to deform on impact but dense enough to hold together and penetrate through hide and bone. These are not sabot rounds and do not require a rifled choke or rifled barrel to function, which keeps them compatible with most field guns without any additional investment. At five rounds per box, the pack size suits hunters who pre-load specific hunting loads rather than burning through range quantities. This is a working deer slug, priced and packaged for the field.
