Description

Hornady’s Varmint Express line is built around one purpose: putting varmints and small predators down cleanly at the ranges where a flat-shooting cartridge like the .22-250 Remington earns its reputation. This load pairs that cartridge with Hornady’s 55-grain V-MAX bullet, a polymer-tipped projectile whose tip initiates rapid, violent expansion on contact — the kind of terminal performance that matters when a prairie dog or coyote offers a narrow window and no second chance.

The polymer tip does more than trigger expansion. It also protects the bullet’s profile during feeding and flight, which translates directly into the consistent ballistic coefficients that make range estimation and hold-over calculations reliable from shot to shot. The V-MAX is loaded over a brass Boxer-primed case, which means once-fired brass is easy to deprime and reload for anyone who works up their own varmint loads.

At 3,680 feet per second muzzle velocity and 1,654 foot-pounds of energy, this load launches flat enough that wind reading and range estimation matter more than trajectory compensation at most practical varminting distances. Hornady specifies a G1 ballistic coefficient of .255 for this bullet — not the highest number in the .22-250 lineup, but appropriate for a lighter projectile optimized for explosive fragmentation rather than long-range drift resistance. Twenty rounds per box keeps the packaging manageable for a range session or a morning in the field.
