Hornady’s Critical Duty load in .357 Magnum is built around the demands of law enforcement and armed professionals who need consistent terminal performance after passing through real-world obstacles. Where a standard hollow point can plug with material from an intervening barrier and fail to expand, the FlexLock bullet addresses this through a combination of two design elements that work together rather than independently.

The first is the Flex Tip insert seated in the bullet’s cavity. Because it is a firm polymer rather than an open air space, it cannot pack with denim, glass, or wallboard during penetration — the tip is displaced inward on impact, initiating expansion even after the bullet has pushed through intermediate material. The second element is the InterLock band, a mechanical cannelure that locks the jacket and lead core together at a structural level. Under the stress of high-velocity barrier penetration, conventional bonded or cup-and-core bullets can shed jacket weight; the InterLock band is engineered to prevent that separation and keep the bullet’s mass intact through the terminal event, which directly affects how deep and how consistently it penetrates.

The 135-grain projectile weight positions this load toward the lighter end of the .357 Magnum spectrum, which in revolvers tends to translate to a sharper, faster impulse compared to heavier slugs at lower velocity. Cases are nickel-plated, which eases extraction in adverse conditions and makes it straightforward to visually distinguish this ammunition from practice loads. Each box contains 25 rounds.
