Hornady’s Subsonic handgun ammunition is built for shooters running suppressed .45 ACP pistols or anyone who wants reliable terminal performance without breaking the sound barrier. The .45 ACP has always operated in subsonic territory for standard loads, but this line is engineered specifically around that velocity envelope rather than simply landing there by coincidence.

The projectile is Hornady’s XTP, a jacketed hollowpoint with a controlled-expansion design that has a long track record in defensive applications. The challenge with subsonic hollowpoints is consistent expansion at reduced impact velocities — a cavity that opens reliably at 1,100 fps may not perform the same way at 925 fps. Hornady addresses this through two design elements: long relief grooves cut into the gilding metal jacket thin the walls in a way that promotes petal initiation at lower velocities, and a Flex Tip insert sits inside the hollowpoint cavity to prevent clogging and help drive expansion even when hydraulic pressure is limited. Together these features keep terminal performance predictable where a conventional hollowpoint might not fully expand.

The 230-grain bullet weight keeps the load well beneath the speed of sound, and powder selection is tuned for consistency across production lots rather than pushing for maximum velocity. Brass cases are reloadable, and the ammunition is non-corrosive. At 925 fps muzzle velocity it functions reliably through standard .45 ACP semi-automatic actions. Each box contains 20 rounds.
