Hornady’s Match line in 6.5 Creedmoor with the 120-grain ELD Match bullet is built for precision rifle competition and serious long-range target work. The central engineering challenge in match ammunition is maintaining a consistent, predictable ballistic coefficient from the muzzle to the target, and this load addresses that directly through bullet construction rather than just powder charge uniformity.
Conventional hollow-point boat-tail match bullets suffer from aerodynamic heating at higher velocities: the polymer tip deforms as it travels downrange, changing the bullet’s meplat and causing the ballistic coefficient to drift in ways that vary shot to shot. Hornady’s Heat Shield tip is made from a thermoplastic material that resists that heat-induced deformation, so the BC the bullet leaves the muzzle with is essentially the BC it carries through the rest of its trajectory. For long-range shooting, where even small BC variations compound into meaningful point-of-impact shifts, that consistency matters more than the nominal BC number itself.
The 120-grain projectile sits in a useful middle ground for 6.5 Creedmoor: it exits at 2,910 fps, which keeps it supersonic well past practical andatory distances, while remaining lighter than the 140-grain loads that dominate the caliber. That velocity advantage translates to a flatter trajectory and slightly less wind drift correction at moderate ranges, which can simplify holds during timed stages. The G7 BC of .252 and G1 of .501 are Doppler radar-verified figures, not derived estimates, giving handloaders and competitors a reliable baseline for ballistic solver inputs. Brass cases and centerfire priming make these cases suitable for reloading once fired.
