Precision Hunter is Hornady’s answer for hunters who need a load that holds together at close range and still expands reliably at distance. The 6mm ARC cartridge was developed in close collaboration with a specialized U.S. Department of Defense unit looking for a round that could do serious work from an AR-15-length platform without the compromises that came with the smaller 5.56 or the heavier recoil and weight of larger intermediate cartridges. The result is a caliber that pushes high-BC projectiles to genuine hunting velocities while keeping the overall package compact enough for bolt guns running short or micro actions.

The 103-grain ELD-X bullet at the heart of this load is built around Hornady’s Heat Shield tip, which resists the aerodynamic heating that causes conventional polymer tips to deform in flight and alter the bullet’s BC mid-trajectory. That matters most at longer ranges where the tip has had more time to heat up. The ELD-X is also a dual-purpose construction: the outer jacket is designed to initiate expansion across a wide velocity window, while the inner core is bonded to retain enough weight for adequate penetration on deer-sized game even at extended distances. This is not a varmint bullet pushed into a hunting role — the construction is specifically tuned for controlled expansion on larger animals.
