Description

Hornady’s Custom line exists for shooters who want a factory load built around the same XTP bullet that handloaders have trusted for decades in serious defensive and hunting applications. The XTP — Extreme Terminal Performance — is a jacketed hollow point engineered to begin expanding reliably at a wide range of impact velocities, then continue that expansion in a controlled, uniform petal pattern rather than fragmenting. That controlled expansion is the key trade-off here: where some hollow points trade structural integrity for dramatic upset, the XTP prioritizes penetration depth alongside expansion, which matters when a shot must travel through clothing or an intervening barrier before reaching vital tissue.

The 124-grain weight sits in a practical middle ground for 9mm — heavier than 115-grain loads and therefore carrying more sectional density for deeper tissue penetration, while still moving at a velocity that feeds reliably in the widest range of pistols. Hornady loads this round in new brass cases with Boxer primers, which means the spent cases are straightforward to reload if you recover them at the range. The propellant charge is non-corrosive, so standard cleaning intervals apply without any special considerations for case or bore maintenance.

This is a 25-round box, sized appropriately for carry rotation or evaluation rather than range volume work. Hornady states a 4-inch test barrel for their published velocity figure, so actual performance in shorter or longer barrels will vary accordingly — worth factoring in if you’re running a compact carry gun or a longer-barreled pistol.
