Description
Hornady’s American Gunner combo pack is built around a practical premise: the ammunition you carry for defense should be ballistically close enough to your practice load that range time actually prepares you for real-world use. This 250-round package addresses that directly by pairing one 50-round box of American Gunner XTP hollow points with four 50-round boxes of 115-grain FMJ training ammunition, both at the same bullet weight so recoil character and point of impact stay consistent between them.
The XTP bullet is a controlled-expansion design — it is engineered to initiate expansion reliably while retaining enough mass and structure to achieve adequate penetration rather than fragmenting early. That balance makes it a workable choice for concealed carry or home defense, where overpenetration and terminal consistency both matter. The FMJ rounds share the same 115-grain projectile weight, which keeps your muscle memory honest: you are not training on a substantially different-feeling cartridge and then switching to something heavier or lighter when you load for carry.
Both loads use brass cases with Boxer primers, which means spent brass is reloadable if you work up your own cartridges. The package ships in a reusable Hornady Red, White and Blue ammo can and includes a Hornady hat and sticker. The can itself is a functional bonus — durable storage for future range trips once the ammunition is gone. At 250 rounds total, this is a reasonable quantity for a focused training session combined with enough defensive ammunition to load several magazines and still have rounds left over for function testing.
