American Whitetail TIPPED is Hornady’s answer to a straightforward problem: deer hunters who want the ballistic performance of a premium polymer-tipped bullet without stepping up to a custom or match-grade load. The 154-grain SST is a proven weight for the 7mm bore, heavy enough to carry energy through wind and distance while remaining flat-shooting at the ranges most whitetail hunters actually shoot.

The SST bullet works through a two-part system. The polymer tip drives rearward into the lead core on impact, initiating rapid expansion even at the reduced velocities you get at longer ranges. The InterLock ring—a raised band inside the jacket that mechanically locks to the core—keeps the bullet from shedding mass during that expansion. That retained weight is what sustains penetration after the initial shock, which matters when a deer is quartering away or the shot is taken through a shoulder.

Brass cases and consistent primers are not incidental details here. Uniform case neck tension and primer seating directly affect shot-to-shot pressure consistency, which in turn affects where the bullet lands relative to where you aimed. For a hunting load used in cold conditions or loaded into a magazine and carried all day, that consistency is worth more than marginal velocity gains from a hotter load. The 7mm PRC chambering gives this bullet a significant powder column to work with, so the 154-grain SST launches with enough velocity to make the polymer tip meaningful at practical hunting distances.
