Description
Hornady’s Backcountry Defense ammunition is built for one specific situation: a close-range encounter with a dangerous animal in terrain where you have no backup. The DGH — Dangerous Game Handgun — bullet is a jacketed design engineered to drive straight through heavy muscle and bone without deflecting off angled surfaces. That protected point bonds the jacket to the core, keeping the bullet’s nose geometry intact from the moment it leaves the barrel through the full length of its wound channel, which translates directly to the deep, consistent penetration that stops a large, aggressive animal reliably.
The jacketed construction offers a practical advantage over hard-cast lead loads beyond terminal performance: it produces no lead smoke on firing. In a fast, high-stress situation, that means a cleaner sight picture immediately after the shot, which matters when a follow-up round may be necessary. Hard cast bullets are a proven choice for penetration, but the smoke they generate can briefly obscure your target at close range — the DGH bullet avoids that trade-off without sacrificing the penetration depth that makes heavy handgun loads useful against large game.
The 240-grain bullet weight sits at the heavier end of what this cartridge commonly handles, and Hornady loads it to 1,620 fps, producing 1,398 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That combination of sectional density and velocity is what allows the round to meet the penetration demands of dangerous game defense without relying on expansion — the DGH bullet is not designed to expand, and that is intentional. Expansion trades penetration depth for tissue disruption; for an animal that may be charging through brush, straight-line depth is the priority. Twenty rounds per box.
