Description

Hornady’s Backcountry Defense is built for a specific problem: close-range encounters with dangerous wildlife in remote terrain where a handgun is what you have. The round is not intended to replicate defensive hollow-point performance against human threats — it is engineered around the opposite priority, maximum straight-line penetration with minimal deflection, because stopping a large predator requires driving deep through dense muscle and bone rather than expanding quickly near the surface.

The projectile is a DGH, or Dangerous Game Handgun bullet, which differs from a conventional jacketed hollow point in a meaningful way. The nose is locked to the core so the bullet resists deformation and maintains its trajectory on contact, rather than mushrooming. That construction also eliminates the lead smoke produced by hard-cast bullets, which can obscure the target and slow follow-up shots — a real consideration when the threat is moving fast at short distance.

The 138-grain weight is deliberately heavy for the 9mm case. Heavier bullets carry more sectional density, which translates to deeper tissue penetration for a given velocity. Running at 1,150 fps from a +P charge, the load delivers that mass at enough velocity to be effective while staying within the pressure limits of pistols rated for +P. Brass cases make the rounds reloadable if that matters, and the 25-round box is sized for practical carry quantities rather than range volume.

This is a purpose-specific round. It makes trade-offs — reduced expansion, heavier recoil impulse versus standard 9mm loads — that are entirely reasonable given what it is designed to do. If your backcountry sidearm needs to handle bears or mountain lions rather than paper targets, this is where Hornady focused the design.
