Description

Hornady BLACK in .450 Bushmaster is built for hunters pursuing whitetail, feral hogs, or other heavy-bodied game at the ranges where this cartridge does its best work. The line was developed to cycle reliably across the range of AR-platform configurations — direct impingement, gas piston, suppressed or unsuppressed, carbine or pistol-length — so you are not locked into a specific setup to get consistent function.

The 250-grain FTX bullet uses a flexible polymer tip that serves two purposes: it initiates reliable expansion on impact at a wide range of striking velocities, and it prevents tip deformation during feeding and under recoil in a magazine stack. That matters for a hunting round, where you may carry loaded for an entire season. The tip also contributes to a G1 ballistic coefficient of .210, which is respectable for a bullet of this diameter and weight, helping resist velocity loss downrange relative to a flat-base or open-cavity design.

Sectional density comes in at .175. That figure reflects how well the bullet’s weight is concentrated relative to its cross-sectional area, and it is a reasonable indicator of penetration depth on larger animals — enough to reach vitals through the shoulder on deer-sized and larger game. Muzzle velocity out of a 20-inch barrel is 2,200 fps, delivering over 2,600 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. By 200 yards, retained energy drops to roughly 1,289 foot-pounds, which gives a practical sense of where the cartridge remains suitable for clean, ethical kills on medium to large game. Brass cases are reloadable.
