Description

Hornady BLACK in 5.56 NATO is a range and competition load built around consistency rather than terminal expansion — this is ammunition for putting rounds on paper accurately and repeatedly, not for hunting. The 62-grain full metal jacket bullet is manufactured using Hornady’s Advanced Manufacturing Process, which controls jacket concentricity and wall thickness from one round to the next. That uniformity matters in practice: tighter shot-to-shot consistency in bullet construction translates directly to tighter groups downrange, particularly at extended distances where small variances in ballistic coefficient compound.

The FMJ projectile is seated in reloadable brass cases with Boxer primers, so handloaders can reclaim the brass after a range session. The 62-grain weight puts this load in the same class as the military M855 by mass, making it a reasonable choice for rifles with faster twist rates that stabilize heavier-for-caliber projectiles, though it will function reliably across a wide range of common AR-platform twist rates. Muzzle velocity is rated at 3,060 feet per second, generating 1,289 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle from a 24-inch test barrel — figures worth keeping in mind if your barrel runs shorter, as velocity will be proportionally lower. The load is not recommended for hunting. It comes in a 20-round box, with full cases available in 200 rounds.
