Description

Hornady’s Critical Defense line was built around a straightforward problem: hollow point bullets can plug with material from heavy clothing before they reach tissue, causing them to perform more like a solid than an expanding round. The FTX bullet addresses this directly with a polymer tip that fills the hollow cavity. On impact, the tip is driven inward, initiating expansion even when the bullet has passed through denim, leather, or similar barriers that would otherwise defeat a conventional hollow point.

The .25 ACP is a cartridge associated with small, easily concealed pocket pistols, and Critical Defense in this chambering reflects that context. At 35 grains, the bullet is optimized for the short barrel lengths typical of those firearms, where heavier projectiles may not reach sufficient velocity to expand reliably. Muzzle velocity is listed at 900 fps with 63 ft-lbs of energy — modest figures that reflect the cartridge’s nature rather than any shortcoming in the load itself.

Hornady loads this ammunition with a low-flash propellant, which matters in low-light defensive situations where muzzle flash can temporarily degrade your vision at the moment you need it most. Cases are brass, boxer-primed, and reloadable. The nickel plating on the case aids extraction and makes rounds easier to identify in poor lighting when loading or checking a chamber.
