Hornady’s Critical Defense load in .38 Special is built around one practical problem: hollow point bullets frequently pack with clothing material before they reach tissue, which prevents expansion and turns them into slow, blunt-nosed projectiles. The Flex Tip insert addresses this directly. The soft polymer tip occupies the hollow cavity so there is nothing for fabric to catch on during penetration; once the bullet reaches the target, the tip compresses inward and initiates consistent expansion regardless of what it passed through on the way. That consistency matters most when the threat is wearing denim, leather, or layered clothing — conditions that routinely defeat conventional hollow points.

Hornady loads this ammunition in nickel-plated brass cases rather than standard copper-washed brass. Nickel resists corrosion better in humid or salt-laden environments, which is worth noting for anyone carrying a revolver in a pocket or purse where the finish on a cartridge takes more wear. The nickel surface also feeds and extracts with less friction, though in a revolver that is a secondary benefit at best.

The propellant charge is selected to produce useful velocity even from short-barreled revolvers — the snub-nosed .38 being one of the most common defensive carry platforms — while limiting muzzle flash so a shooter’s night-adapted vision is not blown out by a single shot in low light. At 110 grains, the projectile is on the lighter end of the .38 Special range, which contributes to that velocity figure while keeping recoil manageable in compact guns.
