Hornady’s Critical Defense load in .38 Special +P is built around a single practical problem: hollow point bullets that fail to expand when they pass through heavy clothing before reaching a target. The Flex Tip insert sits in the bullet’s cavity and prevents fabric, denim, or other material from packing it shut on the way in. When the bullet reaches tissue, that same tip initiates and guides expansion reliably, producing consistent terminal performance regardless of what the threat is wearing.

The 110-grain FTX bullet is loaded to +P pressure, which extracts more velocity from the cartridge than standard .38 Special loadings. That added velocity matters for expansion — hollow points need a minimum threshold of impact energy to open correctly, and shorter-barreled revolvers, which are the natural home for this load, give up muzzle velocity compared to a full-size handgun. The +P designation compensates for that loss. Verify that your revolver is rated for +P before running this ammunition.

Nickel-plated brass cases serve two purposes here. Nickel resists the humidity that accelerates corrosion in a carry gun that lives close to the body, and the bright finish is easier to pick out in low-light chamber checks. The propellant charge is formulated to reduce muzzle flash, which preserves your night-adapted vision in a defensive situation where you cannot choose your lighting.
