Description

Hornady Critical Defense in .45 ACP is built around the premise that a defensive round has to work the first time, under any conditions. The central problem it solves is hollow point clogging — when a conventional hollow point strikes heavy clothing, denim, or other barrier material, the cavity can pack with fabric before the bullet reaches tissue, effectively turning it into a ball round that passes through without expanding. Hornady’s Flex Tip design addresses this directly: a polymer insert fills the hollow point cavity so there is nothing for fabric or debris to pack into. When the bullet enters soft tissue, that insert compresses and drives outward, initiating expansion uniformly around the entire bullet mouth rather than relying on hydraulic pressure alone to open an already-obstructed cavity.

The 185-grain projectile is loaded to 1,000 fps muzzle velocity, a moderate pressure that keeps felt recoil manageable in compact .45 platforms while still generating enough energy — 411 ft-lbs at the muzzle — to drive reliable expansion. Brass cases are nickel-plated, which resists corrosion in the humid environments a carry gun is likely to see and reflects available light well enough to make chamber checks easier in low-light conditions. Primers are sealed against moisture. The round feeds from a box of 20, and cases are suitable for inspection without special tooling. This is purpose-built carry ammunition, not a range load, and is priced and packaged accordingly.
