Description

Hornady’s Critical Defense line was built around a specific real-world problem: conventional hollow point bullets can pack with denim, leather, or other clothing fibers before they reach tissue, which prevents expansion and turns a defense load into something closer to a hard-cast round. The FTX bullet addresses this directly. A pliable polymer tip sits inside the hollow cavity and is driven rearward on impact, initiating consistent expansion even after the bullet has pushed through multiple layers of clothing. Because the tip occupies the cavity, there is nothing for fabric to clog.

The +P pressure designation means this load runs at a higher chamber pressure than standard .45 ACP, which translates to increased velocity from a given barrel length. That added velocity gives the 185-grain projectile more energy on target and contributes to more reliable expansion across a wider range of shot distances. Shooters should confirm their firearm is rated for +P before using this ammunition, as not all .45 ACP platforms are built to the same pressure tolerance.

Hornady uses nickel-plated brass cases in this line rather than bare brass. The plating serves two functions: it makes the cartridge noticeably easier to see during a chamber check in low light, and it resists the surface corrosion that can develop when ammunition is carried for extended periods against the body. The propellant formulation is chosen to reduce muzzle flash, which matters when a defensive shot is taken in darkness — a bright flash at the muzzle can temporarily compromise your ability to assess and respond to a continuing threat.
