Hornady’s Critical Defense line was built around a straightforward problem: hollow point ammunition can fail to expand when the cavity gets plugged with clothing material before it reaches tissue. The FTX bullet addresses this directly. The tip is a soft polymer insert, not an open cavity, so it cannot deform or pack with fabric during penetration. On impact, that insert is driven rearward into the lead core, initiating controlled, consistent expansion regardless of what the bullet passed through to get there. The result is a bullet that behaves more predictably across the range of barriers a self-defense round is likely to encounter.

The 5.7x28mm chambering brings its own geometry to the equation.
